Simple Fabric Cake

Hello Sugar Lovers!

I hope everyone had a great new year and that you all got to have some time off to relax before going back to the grind. I decided for this blog I would try some new designs for a cake. I was super rusty but I think I did alright…all things considered.

So you’re going to need a golden cake mix and a jar of cream cheese icing. Yes we are getting super fancy with this. I thought something simple would be good to start back with. This also gave my decorating skills some practice. You will also need some sprinkles to decorate with. I used pink, gold & yellow pearls as well chunky pieces of gold. You can use what ever you like though…be creative!

So 1st thing you want to do is get your cake baked. I’m not going to write out the cake instructions as I will include a picture of it below.

Also, Side Note: I always was embarrassed that I used boxed cake mix for my blogs. Until I found this tik toker (https://www.tiktok.com/@bakemydaymimo?lang=en) who is a professional baker and she uses boxed mix. After I saw that I felt soooo much better.

Once you have that all blended up. Separate into 2 circular greased cake pans. I have never had the courage to put all the batter in to one pan. I think it would make a pretty big mess but who knows maybe next time!

Once you have them evenly distributed you can place them in the oven for the allotted amount of time.

For those that don’t know this trick you can tell when the cake is done by sticking a tooth pick into the centre of the cake. If it comes out clean then its ready!

Take the pans out and make sure you let them cool in the pan for awhile. After that you can tip the pan over and the cake should fall right out. Sometimes you may need to run a knife along the edges to loosen it. Once they are out of the pans I would also let them cool for a little while longer.

Alright! so everything is cooled and ready to go. Next you are going to level the top of one of your cakes so that you can stack one on top of the other. You can choose to level both cakes off if you want the top to be flat. I didn’t really know what I was going to do with this cake until I started decorating. Sometimes that can be fun to just wing it.

Next your going to icing the cake. A great way that I have found to icing the cake is to pipe the icing onto the cake and then use your tools to smooth it out. Don’t worry about it looking pretty when you pipe it though because its just going to get spread out anyway.

I had a hard time with this part actually. I have remembered my frustration when it comes to jar icing. Next time I am making my own icing. It’s not that the icing is bad its just that I can never get it to do what I need it to. It never seems to get as smooth as I want it.

I soon realized that it was not going to get smooth so I decided to deliberately make patterns on the sides of the cake to cover up the monstrosity that was my icing job. I then decided to try a fabric type of pattern on the top which turned out not to bad actually. In order to get the pattern all you have to do is run lines along the top of your cake with a tooth pick.

After that it was time for sprinkles. I used pearl’s to connect the lines on top of the cake. Then I used the chunks of gold sprinkles on the sides. I have said this so many times but if you are in doubt and you don’t like how the cake looks just get some sprinkles on there and your good to go.

I thought about getting some fondant out but I didn’t think I was ready for that one yet. I didn’t mind how this one turned out.

That’s it! If anyone makes this let me know how yours turned out.
