Hello Sugar Lovers!
Oh My God….I did it. Successful baking. I love it when I can say that. I was in the grocery store and I had been looking at this creme brulee package. I didn’t want to try it because I was under the impression that you had to have some sort of torch to get the top all caramelized. Granted I now know this was silly because …hello…broil setting on the oven. So I decided to grab it and give it a try.
This was a lot more simple than I thought it would be. I think it was the idea that it is a fancy desert and usually you only get it when you go out to dinner. Well apparently now I am fancy because I was victorious!…muhahaha…..Ok I am done gloating. Let’s get baking guys!
Once you open the package you are going to see two packages. Now the larger one is the one that you will use first.
You are going to combine one cup of milk and one cup of whipping cream to a sauce pan. You then are going to add in the custard package. Once you have stirred that up you are going to boil it and whisk it occasionally. I watched it pretty closely because quite frankly I only had one package and I didn’t want to mess it up.
You will know when it is done because it will get thicker. The package will tell you to bring it to a gentle boil….I don’t really know what that means. So I pretty much just winged it with the boiling part. It also said to let it simmer for thirty seconds. I just kept it boiling until it got thick but not to thick because you are going to need to pour it into the dishes.
Now once it is done you are going to pour it into your dishes. I am not sure what type of dishes they are called but you can see in the picture what I am talking about. I have to admit I have never used them to make anything super fancy…we usually use them for dipping sauce…amazing I know. If you don’t have these dishes than I would say you can use a small glass dish that it oven safe. I am sure you should be able to find something in your kitchen. I bet you can even get away with just making a big creme brulee. If you try this you definitely have to let me know how it works out!
Once you have poured the mixture into the cups you are going to either put them into the fridge for 30 minutes or set them out for one hour. I decided on the one hour option. I think sometimes it can be nice to take a break from what ever you are baking to let things cool off unless you are in a rush. That all being said the box says you will be able to get 4 servings out of it. I only got about 2 and a half. I am not sure if it is because maybe my dishes are bigger or I filled them to much. I didn’t bother me because there is only two of us anyway. Just so you guys are aware in case you are serving this to guests make sure to get another package or two.
When it is all cooled off you are going to take that second package it will say caramelized sugar on it in small letters. Make sure you coat the top of the mixture generously. Also make sure you crush up the sugar in the package because it will most likely be stuck together. Some chunks I wasn’t able to crush so I picked them put as you can see.
Once your done that you can put it into the oven on broil for about three minutes.
When you bring them out let them cool for awhile before serving. If you have never tried creme brulee before you are going to notice there is a layer on the top that gets hard and caramelized. (Side note I can not tell you how many times I have spelled caramelized wrong at this point….okay on with the blog!) Don’t worry this is how it is suppose to be. When you are ready to eat it you are going to take a bit of the caramelized sugar on top and a bit of the mixture on the bottom. It is so great you should definitely try it some time.
That it is it! Easy right? Usually when I see a recipe that you have to use the stove and the oven I am trying to talk myself out of it…..to much work….sad right? However it really was not much work at all.
I hope you enjoyed the blog guys! Now I have been thinking about the new changes that have been happening to The Baking Project and I wanted to know what you guys think about a new idea that I had. I know a lot of online blogs include the recipe and ingredients at the bottom of the page that you can print off. Is this something you guys would like? If so I can try my best to figure out how to do that. Leave your comments so I know what you think!
