Hello Sugar Lovers!
Alright, so last week I feel like I KILLED it with those spooky cupcakes I made. So naturally it seems about right that I horribly destroy some Rice Krispie Squares! So sit down and enjoy the bumpy ride guys. I decided to make some rice krispies for my brother. He likes camo and he likes rice krispies so I thought this would be a great idea….I don’t think he had it in him to tell me that they were bad. So in true Baking Project tradition, do as I say not as I do.
Ingredients:
- Marshmallows (I bought 2 bags mini ones)
- Rice Krispies (1 box)
- Green & Brown food colouring (I used brown icing colouring)
- Butter (a small amount for melting and some for using on the utensils)
- Camouflage Chocolate Candies (mine were called Sixlets)
*Everything else you should be able to find in your kitchen*
First thing we gotta do is melt some butter in the pot. I am going to be 100% honest with you. I didn’t measure anything….and I mean anything. I guess I felt like I could do no wrong when it came to rice krispies. I was wrong….as usual. But! no regrets I crushed it anyway with my bravery right?
Anyway back to the butter that I didn’t measure. Just put a bit in a pot just to make a think layer on the bottom. When your making rice krispies I will let you know that butter is your best friend because with out it you can bet its going to stick to everything. Put the stove on low to medium heat. I obviously put it on medium because I’m as impatient as a person could get.
Next your going to put your marshmallows. I put in one bag first and got that melted. For this I am going to include the recipe for rice krispies at the bottom of this blog. The recipe will be on the box of cereal. All your going to do is just cut that in half for the brown layer and then use the other half for the green layer. When you do melt down the marshmallows your going to need to stir it frequently so if you have a spoon that is metal rather than wood it will make your life easier for sure. Also while you are melting down the marshmallows you can take a few seconds to line the baking pan with cooking spray or a small touch of butter.
So I melted down that bag of marshmallows then I just eye balled the rice krispie ratio. This is where I messed it up….I have literally been baking for about 10 minutes and I’ve already messed it up….New record!
So how did I mess that up do you ask? I did not put nearly enough rice krispies in. If you had left marshmallows out in the sun for hours and added a handful of cereal. That is about the consistency your going to be imagining with mine anyway. Now that you have that lovely image in your head. We are going to move on to putting the dye in. This is something that you actually do just estimate depending on how light or dark that you like. So put in the amount that you would like in the pot and mix that up. Once you’re done with this you can put it into the pan that you would like to use. Your going to push the rice krispies down and towards the sides until you have made your first layer. Again, using a metal tool would be best and if you need to you may need to put a bit of butter on your utensil and that will help you flatten it out. You can also honestly just use your hands with a small bit of butter on them. Watch out though because it will be warm. You can also use a small amount of butter on anything that your using while your cooking it if you find its sticking to much.
Put that layer in the fridge while you repeat all of that one more time but at the end of that you are going to make that layer green. Once you have dyed that layer you’re going to put the green on top of the brown. Put it in the fridge for 1-2 minutes just to cool it off a smidge. So that when you put the candy on it won’t melt right away. The candy that I found actually said Camo on it but if you can’t find the ones that I did all you have to do is get the camo type colours and your should be fine.
Once your done with it put it in the fridge until its cooled down then you can cut them up and your good to go. Be warned they can be really annoying to cut up if there to cold so you may want to leave them out for a bit before you cut them.
Well thanks for hangin’ in there with me guys! We made it through together. Make sure you check out my Social Media Tab to see links to The Baking Projects Facebook Page and Patreon Page. I have recently put up a poll on Facebook about what I should make for one of my blogs so make sure you check it out and cast your vote! The poll closes on November 10th.
