Hello Sugar Lovers!
As I’m sure you guys have already guessed I am a very big fan of Halloween. Its absolutely my favourite holiday. However, like all good things it must come to an end. So I am here with you guys kicking off our last Halloween treat until next year! Let’s make some cupcakes!
Ingredients:
- Chocolate Cake Mix Box (ingredients you will need will be on the box)
- 1 Jar of Vanilla Icing
- Purple & Red Icing Colouring
Tools:
- Cupcake Papers (Halloween themed of course)
- Halloween rings (skulls, spiders & bats)
- Piping bag with a circle tip
*Everything else you will be able to find in your kitchen*
First thing your going to want to do is pre-heat your oven to the amount that it says on the back of the cake mix box. It will depend on the type of pan you have. Once you’ve done that you can mix up all your ingredients that you need to make the batter. When you’ve got that all mixed up you can set that aside and get your cups ready to put the batter in. I had two different types of cups so I tried to make the amount of each match. I got mine at the dollar store. I haven’t ever been one to spend a lot of money on cupcake cups. I think it could be a good idea to try and spend a little more though because I find it annoying when you buy a cup for a design and then you don’t end up seeing the design anyway after the cake inside bakes….Food for thought!
When you have finished that you can go ahead and put your cake mix in the cups. I have spoken about this before in my blogs but I find using two spoons to take the batter out of the bowl and into the cups a lot easier. You just have to be kinda stealthy with it. I personally like playing the “Let’s not get any batter on the tin” game. I seem to like playing games that will help me have less dishes to deal with at the end….I highly recommend doing this. Once you’ve got your batter in all the cups you can put them into the oven.

The cake mix box is going to tell you that the box will make 24 regular sized cupcakes….now unless you are Houdini I’m going to have to call BS on this one. Now you just have to let your cake bake for the allotted amount of time. I always find cupcakes seem to take less time then you would think. Once that tooth pick goes through and comes out clean you are good to take them out and let them cool.
While you are letting them cool its time for icing! You can make what ever colour you would like. My thought processes usually include:
- I have a wicked cool idea, its going to be the bomb when its done
- Oh look I finished it and it looks absolutely horrible. I wish I had done this instead.
So as you can guess this is exactly what happened with the icing. I really wanted a blood red colour but instead I got pink. I’m not entirely sure why every time I colour icing I always try and make a really dark colour. It NEVER works….EVER. There has to be a better way of doing it. Now its a lot easier getting the colour you want with actual icing dye than just regular food colouring. However, if you want a dark colour you better get ready to mentally go back to science class because you can’t add to much or it will become runny and you can’t add to little or else you won’t get the colour you want.
To get the colour that I did though, just take your jar of icing and empty it into a bowl. Then you will add your colouring to the desired amount that you would like. I just did two small globs (did you like that unit of measurement?) This part is really hard to measure. If your unsure just add small toothpick fulls until you get an idea of the pigment that is in your colouring. Once you have gotten the colour you want your going to put it into your piping bag and if you need to you can let it cool for a minute or so in the fridge.
Side Note: “Colour” word count = 13
Now you can start icing your cupcakes. I like this piping tip a lot because its really pretty forgiving. I usually only use this tip for just the inside of the top of the cupcake just because you will need a lot of icing in order to use this tip all the way around the cupcake. Take your time and just try and make it look like a little bee hive in the middle.

I decided to add a little extra something to my icing being as I didn’t get the blood red colour that I wanted. So I took a tooth pick and dipped it into some purple. Then I took the toothpick and honestly just swirled it around a bit on top of the pink colour I made. The great thing about Halloween is you can be messy and no one says anything because its Halloween and its allowed. So I stirred some up a bunch and others I just swirled maybe two or three times.
Updated “Colour” word count= 15
After your done colouring you can go ahead and add that finishing touch with the Halloween ring on top. Some people like this and others don’t I guess I could see the argument for both. Either you get a free ring with your cupcake or you just get something that you have to take off of it. The great thing about baking for other people is that usually someone is not going to say something bad about a baked good you make…..because they want the dessert. No one wants to mess up their chances of getting a cupcake…that’s just silliness.

Final “Colour” word count= 16 …..jezzz….
And there you have it!!
I want to thank my grandma yet again for giving me the awesome cupcake stand! I hope you all enjoyed having one last crack at this Halloween thing. I had an awesome time making them. I hope everyone had a great Halloween.
