Poison Apples

Hello Sugar Lovers!

So this time I wanted to try something I have never done before. I was trying to think of what I would like to do for this weeks blog. I wanted to do something for Halloween and what is more Halloween than a candy apple?

The way I had it planned out was nothing like how it turned out. I really wanted to do black chocolate around the apple with red chocolate running down from the bottom of the stick down the apple like blood. This however….did not happen…what a surprise. I was trying to find black and red chocolate waffers at bulk barn. They make all different colours and guess what were the only two that I couldn’t find…ya you get it.

So in my bulk barn frustration I took some deep breaths and decided to do a chocolate coating with some Halloween sprinkles. I decided on chocolate rather than candy because candy can be tricky. You need to have the candy at exactly the right temperature or else it could mean bad news. So I definitely need to work my way up to that. So a lot of this will be open to what ever you would like to do creatively. I decided to make mine into treat bags for my co-workers but you can do what ever you like. Lets get started guys!

Ingredients:

  • Milk chocolate waffers (2 pounds to be on the safe side) these melt easier than chips
  • Halloween sprinkles (1/2 pound)
  • 15 apples (I went with green apples)

*these are general measurements it will all depend on how many you want to make. Using these I had quite a bit left over but its also good to get to much than to little*

Tools:

  • 15 skewers
  • Treat bags big enough to fit an apple

*everything else you will be able to find in your kitchen*

First thing is we need to get the water boiled. Your going to fill up a pot about half way or a bit under half way depending on the size of pot you have. Your only going to fill it up that much because you are going to take a bowl that is heat safe that won’t melt and put that on top of the pot. Make sure that the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. This way we can heat up and melt the chocolate without it burning.

While that is boiling you can wash your apples and cut the skewers. Keep the pointed end so you can push it into the apples easier. Cut one at the length that you would like it to be and you can use that as a guide for all the other ones. One thing that I found worked is to take your scissors and cut  around the stick because it will take a lot for you to cut it so that it breaks, unless you have awesome scissors. You can cut that line and then all you have to do is break it. It will usually automatically break at that point that you cut. Once you have cut them you can put all the skewers into the apples so that they are ready to go and easy to grab.

Next get your sprinkles and dump a portion onto a plate so you can easily add the sprinkles onto the chocolate. You are also going to want to get a baking pan and put some parchment paper on it. Then you will spray a little bit of baking spray just to make sure the apples don’t stick when you put them on it.

So things are going to happen pretty fast after this so its important to have everything all set up so that everything is accessible to you while your make the apples. So by now your water should be boiled your going to turn the heat down to about medium heat. You don’t want it boiling over. I am VERY surprised that mine didn’t boil over because I am absolutely terrible with boiling water. How sad is that? I guess I’m just to impatient for my own good. Now your going to put a portion of your chocolate into the bowl. As far as a measurement goes it is going to be more of a judgement call. Depending on how many your making and how far up the apple you want the chocolate to go. You don’t want the bowl filled up to much and you need enough to actually dip the apple in. Add the chocolate gradually as it melts down you can add more slowly. Make sure once its melted down that it is smooth and creamy and there are no lumps.

Once your done that its time to dip some apples! this is the part where your going to have to do a couple things at once so break out your multi-tasking hat. Take your apple and dip it into the chocolate make sure to spin it slowly as you move it so that chocolate doesn’t fall anywhere. next your going to take the apple and get some sprinkles on it by dabbing the apple into the sprinkles.

I made a very bad decision in trying to roll the apples along the sprinkles. Don’t do this…..no seriously don’t do this. For my efforts I was rewarded with a plate full of a nice chocolate sprinkle mix. To avoid this I found that dabbing each side worked much better. After this your going to put it into the fridge on your baking tray. I just had my pan on the counter and that immediately seemed like a bad idea as soon as I put the apple down on the tray. So make sure you put it into the fridge as you finish them. The hard part about this is that you have to continuously stir the chocolate so that it doesn’t become clumpy.

Make sure you keep them in the fridge to harden for at the very least about 30 minutes. I left mine in for 1 hour. I would lean more towards the hour especially if you are thinking of making treat bags out of them. Now again its up to you what you would like to do for decorating. If you are thinking of giving them away it is a good idea to, at the very least, wrap them up in plastic wrap with a little tape on the stem to hold it in place. I did this step and then I got some nice treat bags that will fit an apple and I put some tissue paper inside along with some candy.

There you have it! It doesn’t take to much time to actually make these apples its just very very stressful but hey! practice makes perfect right?
