Hello Sugar Lovers!
So I’m going to be honest with you guys….. I had a rough weekend. I usually do all of my baking for the blog on the weekend and it just wasn’t happening this time. So I decided to experiment a little. So if this kind of thing isn’t for you don’t worry we will get back to our regularly scheduled program next week.
So in all of my “wisdom” I decided that a great idea would be to get some of those packages for cake in a mug. Have you seen those? You can find them at pretty much every grocery store I believe. I saw that and thought to myself…. If I could make a mug of cake look half decent…….I would be the yoda of cake making. This however did not happen. It just looked like cake in a mug, but alas I gave it my all!
Ingredients:
- Cake Mug Kit (usually you will only need water)
- Icing (I used the icing that was in the kit)
- Vanilla Fondant
- Blue and Yellow Icing Dye
- Blue, Green & Yellow Sprinkles
Tools:
- A mug or 2 depending on how many you want to make
- Rose Fondant Molds
- Icing Syringe (picture to come)
- Fondant Tools
*Everything else you should be able to find in your kitchen*
First thing your going to want to do is get your mug and decide what colours you would like to do for the fondant. I tried to match somewhat with the cups as much as I could. However, I had some coloured fondant left over so that’s what I used. You can dye them what ever colour you want. You can see some of my other blogs for help with dyeing the fondant there are quite a few (some are: Winnie’s Cupcakes, ABC Easy as 123)
The order you do things in is really up to you. I decided to do the fondant first because the cake takes next to no time to cook. So you will need to find a mold that you would like to use. I decided on a rose mold. Your going to take the fondant and push it into the mold as much as you can. Your going to then trim off a bit of the access that will be hanging over the mold. Also a good way to make sure all the fondant is getting in the mold is to use a rolling pin. You only need to roll over the fondant a few times. If you are using a regular wooden rolling pin make sure you move slowly when you take the rolling pin off the fondant because it has a tendency to stick.
Your going to then put those molds into the freezer to let them harden a little. I also did the icing before I made the cake because I wanted to try something different. Usually I never use the icing that comes with the cake but I decided to give it a shot. Now I have absolutely no idea what this is actually used for but I used this syringe like tool.

I basically just used it to put icing on the center nicely. You can just cut a hole in the corner of the back of the icing and you can try and put it in the center. So I put the icing in the strange device and honestly it didn’t make much of a difference. If your going to put icing on something my advice would be to just suck it up and put it in a piping bag. I wanted to try and take a short cut in case this was easier…….It wasn’t……There I’ve saved you the trouble. Maybe I just wasn’t doing it properly but the only problem I had was it sticking to the plastic plate that pushes it down. I couldn’t really use it like a syringe to get the icing into the instrument because the icing is thick for one but also it was coming out of a bag. Why did I think this was a good idea you ask?…..no clue, don’t do it, moving on.
*The icing is the foil packages. You get one per cake mix*
Your going to mix up your batter now. Take the mugs and mix the batter up in it. It says between 1-2 minutes depending on your microwave wattage…..who knows that? honestly, who just knows the wattage on their microwave…strange. So for this I just hard core guested. I think I put mine in for about 1 minute 30 seconds.
*The white packages are the cake mix*
Once your cake is done go ahead and take out the fondant from the freezer. Your going to very slowly pop out the flower. Make sure you don’t just pull on the fondant because it will come apart so just be patient. They are usually pretty easy to get out of the mold. Once you have done that you are going to need your fondant tools and shape the outsides of your fondant trimming the edges. You will only need one fondant tool for this. It is the one that looks like a small knife.
Now the rest is going to have to happen very quickly because your probably going to keep the cake warm so once you put the icing on the clock starts ticking. You don’t want the icing or fondant to melt to much before you serve it. So put your frosting on and because mine looked really dumb I just took a toothpick and put some swirls through it and it looked okay. Your going to then add your fondant and sprinkles and you are all done! Whats great about fondant designs and sprinkles is that it hides the absolute disaster that you have created!
So guys thanks for hanging in there for this weeks blog. I also wanted to say thank you to my grandma she gave me the rose molds. They worked great so thanks grandma! I did really enjoy trying something different this week. I think this could be a good idea for a series. Let me know if there are any products out there that you would like me to try!
Happy Baking Everyone!
